I prefer John Mark Karr to Mark David Chapman. Karr merely pretended to kill someone to gain celebrity. He's disturbed, but thankfully not disturbed enough to murder for fame. The backlash against the Boulder district attorney is perplexing. With a murder confession in an unsolved case, what were the authorities supposed to do? Arresting him was proper, just as dropping the charges after interrogating him in custody, and obtaining DNA evidence, was proper. Mike Nifong could learn something about ethics from the Boulder County D.A.: justice, not a conviction, is the goal.
What a freak.
To anybody who was paying attention, this outcome was so predictable. They had no real evidence linking this guy to the murder and based all “alleged” charges on hearsay. This guy got way more than his undeserved fifteen minutes, the media made a bundle and life for shut-ins and low intellect news junkies was tolerable for a while.
On the downside, he escaped a Thai jail and got an all expenses paid luxury trip back to the U.S. on taxpayer’s money. On the upside, he’ll face charges in California that will hopefully land him in jail where he will become someone’s temporary wife.
